2020 Virtual August House of Delegates Recap

During this past House of Delegates meeting, brothers from every chapter of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity were present to consider amendments to our governing documents. With nearly 100 Pilams virtually in attendance, the meeting kicked off on August 16, at 2 p.m. EST. The major topic for consideration was the creation and addition of the Undergraduate Advisory Council (UAC) in place of the previously established “Undergraduate Representative” role.

The new UAC is a group of six undergraduate men of Pi Lambda Phi from around the nation. This all came about after multiple third-party entities advised the Fraternity’s International Executive Council (IEC) to move away from the previous model of having an Undergraduate Representative on the IEC

However, the International Executive Council has always appreciated the student perspective offered by the Undergraduate Representative. Concerned that such a move would remove student input, the IEC commissioned a committee consisting of former Undergraduate Representatives  – Dan Caliari, Alex Winstead, Juan Lopez, and Isaac Hutchinson – to investigate solutions that would align with the recommendations yet keep the student voice in front of the IEC.

Through the diligent work of the Committee in researching best practices from a multitude of organizations, and thinking critically about their own time as an undergraduate representative, the Committee proposed the idea of creating an entire UAC. One of the immediate advantages was that now multiple student voices would be heard instead of just one. Each year we will open up UAC nominations ahead of the Annual Gathering to begin the nominating and selecting process so that each chapter may come into the gathering with a better idea of who they would like representing them for that year. It is the hope that this process will also give chapters time to find a local member who has the passion and drive to work for the betterment of all undergraduate chapters so that there can be a large and qualified pool for the Chapters to choose from.

The vote by the House of Delegates to establish an Undergraduate Advisory Council in place of a singular “Undergraduate Representative” passed with 41 votes in the affirmative and 1 vote in opposition. The vote to confirm the nominated IEC candidates passed with 39 votes in the affirmative and 1 abstention. To confirm vote counts, you may follow chapter by chapter here.
