Fraternities have been around since the mid nineteen century. A fraternal experience in unique in that it enables the participant to be in a group of friends who strive to achieve excellence in areas like academics, personal growth, leadership development, and service to the community all while having a great and memorable social college experience.

Pi Lambda Phi fraternity has existed for 113 years and strives to provide its members with a unique opportunity to enrich and personalize their college experience. Some of the most evident benefits of affiliating with Pi Lambda Phi are listed below.

Scholarship

Academics must be the focus for college students and is therefore an important aspect of being a brother in Pi Lambda Phi. A strong academic record prepares members for success after graduation so our chapters, with the help of our professional staff members and Educational Foundation, strive to provide academic resources, study sessions, scholarship awards, and other incentives to help members achieve academic success. National research has also shown that fraternity members are more likely to complete a college degree and even have higher average GPAs than non-Greek members.

Character

Part of the college experience is growing and developing a personal set of values. While we seek not to change any brother’s personal creed, we do stress the significance of certain fundamentals and principles that we feel create a Well Developed Man. We desire to incorporate the characteristics of unity, pride, trust, responsibility, initiative, organization, respect, and common sense into our daily lives. Values such as always being a gentleman, having the courage to follow our convictions, and respecting authority are also key ideals for a Pi Lam. Through a brother’s years as a Pi Lam, he will often reflect on his character and the choices he makes on a daily basis.

Leadership Development

Membership in Pi Lambda Phi offers the single greatest Leadership Development opportunity offered to a college student. In no other student organization will a leader be challenged to oversee so many different and unique aspects (academics, managing budgets, succession training, recruitment, leading committees, building alumni/community relations, fundraising, risk management, and relationship/team building) of a group as he would with a fraternity. The multitude of life skills that a brother acquires while learning about leadership with a hands-on approach prepares him to have continued success throughout his personal and professional career. 

We encourage our members to seek leadership opportunities both within the fraternity but also around their school and within their community. Our professional staff members and alumni advisors also assist with leadership development by visiting our chapters to provide specific training based on chapter needs. Those training visits are reinforced with regional conferences, annual conventions, and a leadership academy that are all geared toward challenging our young leaders to strive for excellence in all they do.

Teamwork

A fraternity is a team that must be united if it wants to experience success and good times. We recognize that teamwork happens naturally when solid relationships are built between the members of the group. We endeavor to help our members see the value in a unified team by introducing them to group development and team building activities in a fun yet educational manner. These activities are presented to each chapter from our experienced professional staff members during chapter visits, at regional conferences and at our annual leadership convention. When individual members recognize the value in teamwork they can then challenge each other to contribute in an effort to help the group reach its full potential.

Service

A commitment to serving others is something you’d also find evident in Pi Lam chapters across the country. We seek to instill in all of our members a sense of responsibility and contribution to those less fortunate. Our brothers have raised millions for various charities and supported them with countless hours of volunteering. Pi Lambda Phi is affiliated with the March of Dimes which raises money in the effort to help prematurely born babies. 

Brotherhood

Over 45,000 men have established solid life long friendships through Pi Lambda Phi which gives reason for our motto “Not Four Years, But A Lifetime”. Joining a fraternity is similar to becoming part of a family. Pi Lam brothers provide a “home away from home” for new members and offer support and guidance as the new members embark on a new period in their lives. Brothers are known to cheer on each other in times of success while also serving as a means of support when times are tough. Through the experiences they share, wonderful memories and stories are created that will last forever. Brotherhood events, retreats, road trips, and formal dances are just some of the opportunities that exist that also help members enhance their skills in communication and team building. 

Networking

With over 40,000 initiated members, Pi Lams around the world act as a network of friends, mentors, and references which can be extremely beneficial both personally and professionally for our members. Many current and alumni brothers take advantage of both locally planned and nationally planned alumni events every year.
