Joel Smalley Receives the Big Pi
Legends have a way of connecting with the core of those around them. Brother Joel Smalley, PA Gamma Sigma 1956, received Pi Lambda Phi’s Big Pi award at the Presidential Awards Banquet on August 2, 2013.
"I get to see them come in as boys, and leave as men." Joel shared this upon receiving the Big Pi Award. Joel has served as Chapter Advisor to the PA Gamma Sigma chapter at the University of Pittsburgh since 1961. The Big Pi Award is given only to Pi Lambda Phi alumni who have distinguished themselves in their communities and professions.
Joel Smalley is a name well known in Pittsburgh as well as around the country for his service to both his community and Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity.
Joel was initiated on February 11, 1952 as a member of the Pennsylvania Gamma Sigma chapter while attending the University of Pittsburgh. Always active in the chapter, Joel served as Rex in 1953.
After graduation, Joel entered the Insurance Industry where he worked throughout his career and retired as Senior Vice President from Hilb Rogal & Hobbs Co. an insurance group who back in 2007 was ranked ninth in Business Insurance's world's largest brokers list.
Since becoming Chapter Advisor in the Fall of 1961, Joel has taken the time to meet every brother who has been initiated and has worked with every single Rex up to the current Rex, Justin Pena. In honor of his fraternal work, Joel was recognized by Pi Lambda Phi with the following awards:

1979 – Awarded the Edward Goldman Alumnus Achievement Award
2003 – Awarded Pi Lambda Phi’s Diamond Chip Council Key
2007 – Awarded the first Pi Lambda Phi Chapter Advisor of the Year Award
With Joel as the first recipient of the Chapter Advisor Award, it set the benchmark high for all alumni who give their time and commitment as chapter advisor.
Joel has been an active community leader since the early 1960’s. In addition to raising a family, developing his professional career and time devoted to the Fraternity, he gave back to his community for close to 50 years. Listed are some of the organizations Joel volunteered his time to: Committee Member of the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh, Team Captain of The United Jewish Federation, Founding Chair of the Pittsburgh Jewish Association on Aging Board, past president of Jewish Family and Children’s Service.
