“Rags to Riches” was the motto adopted four years ago by the now seniors of the PA Sigma Upsilon chapter at Shippensburg University. During the 2008-2009 school year PA Sigma Upsilon was struggling to survive. Now, only four years later, the chapter received the top award given to fraternities by their institution, Fraternity of the Year.
The Fraternity of the Year is determined by an organization’s success in a wide variety of categories including academics, community service, individual members, philanthropy, risk management, Greek Week, and new members. The chapter was strong in most areas and even received the Excellence in Community Service Award and placed first in Greek Week.
Mark Kandel, Chapter Advisor and a member of PA Beta Upsilon, attributed PA Sigma Upsilon’s success to past and present leadership. “Gary Sanders [former IHQ Executive Director]… has been a positive force in helping Pilam [and PA Sigma Upsilon] grow into what it is today,” said Mark. Brother Kandel also praised the leadership of former Reges Will Brown and Marty Sullivan, along with current Rex, Jake Warner. “[Those] three, along with strong officers thru the years, have made the chapter what it is today.”
When asked what is next for the chapter, Jake stated that “[the chapter’s] next step is going to continue to stay on top. We have gone from the bottom to the top… We are going to continue on the path that we have laid out this year and will continue to improve academically and with PR.”
